About this policy

Earn Your Keys ("the app," "we," or "us") helps a parent or guardian log the supervised practice drives of a teen with a learner's permit, help the teen study for the knowledge and road tests, and keep a record the parent can certify. This policy describes what the app accesses, how it is stored, and the choices available to your family.

Your drives are stored on your phone. With the Family Pass on iPhone, they are also backed up to your own iCloud and shared only with the family members you invite. The app has no account and never sends your drive data to us. It contains no advertising and no analytics of our own. Location is used only during a drive you start. Maps come from Apple Maps on iPhone and Google Maps on Android; on Android, Google receives the map area on screen and basic device and usage information (see Maps below). We never see your routes. You can export or delete your data at any time.

Who the app is for

Earn Your Keys is set up and supervised by a parent or guardian. It is intended to record supervised practice by a teen learner who is accompanied by a licensed adult. During setup, the parent or guardian consents to recording and the teen acknowledges it. The teen takes part too: driving, studying road signs, and following their progress toward a license.

The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The supervising parent or guardian controls the locally stored data and can delete it at any time.

iPhone and Android at a glance

  • Where drives are stored: on the phone, on both iPhone and Android.
  • Cloud backup: iPhone, in your own iCloud with the Family Pass. Android has none; export a backup file to keep a copy.
  • Sharing with family: iPhone, through iCloud with people you invite, with the Family Pass. Android has no sharing; the log stays on one phone.
  • Purchases: iPhone offers the optional Family Pass through the App Store. Android is free, with no purchases.
  • Location permission: iPhone asks at the end of setup ("While Using the App"). Android asks when you start your first drive, with a "Timer only" choice that logs time without location.
  • Maps: Apple Maps on iPhone. Google Maps on Android, where Google receives the map area on screen and basic device and usage information.
  • Ads and analytics of our own: none, on either.
  • Sent to us: nothing, on either.

Information used by the app

The following is stored locally on your device. Location is captured only during an active, explicitly started practice drive; setup details are entered when you first set up the app, and the supervisor's name after a drive ends.

  • Precise location and routes. With permission, GPS points map the route, measure distance, record speed samples, and classify day versus night. Recording starts when you tap Start and ends when you tap Stop, or when the drive ends on its own after 10 minutes without movement. The app uses While Using the App location only, never Always (background) location permission, geofencing, or live sharing, and records nothing outside a drive you started. On Android you can allow precise or approximate location; with approximate only, most drives record time without a route. A started drive keeps recording if the screen locks or you switch apps (for example, to Maps). iPhone shows its location indicator, and Android shows a "Recording a supervised drive" notification, the whole time. If the car does not move for 8 minutes, the app asks whether you are still driving; if no one answers, the drive ends at 10 minutes and is saved as ending when the car stopped.
  • Rough spots. For the smoothness coach, rough spots such as hard braking, quick acceleration, and sharp turns come from how the car speeds up, slows down and turns, measured by GPS, so picking up or moving the phone doesn't count. The app does not use the phone's motion sensors. It saves a short summary of those moments with the drive.
  • Drive details. Date, time, duration, distance, selected conditions, and the supervising adult name entered for sign-off.
  • Notes, supervisors, and skills. Notes you write about a drive, coaching notes you pin for a driver, the names (and optional relationship, such as "Mom") of the supervising adults you save, and the driving skills you check off, with who checked each one and when. These are stored just like your drives: on your phone, and with the Family Pass in your own iCloud, shared only with family you invite. They are never sent to us. On Android, only the skills checklist exists, and it stays on the phone.
  • Setup details. The name on the learner's permit, state, permit issue date, study or test progress marked by the user, and, on iPhone, the date a driver is marked as licensed. The name appears on the progress report so it shows who did the driving. Like everything else, it is stored on your phone, and with the Family Pass in your own iCloud, and is shared only with family you invite. It is never sent to us.

The app does not access contacts, photos, an address book, advertising identifiers, health data, or data for advertising or tracking.

Storage and protection

  • On your phone. Your drives are kept in the app's private storage on your phone. Without the Family Pass they stay only on that phone and are not included in automatic phone backups, so export a backup if you want a copy elsewhere.
  • iCloud backup (Family Pass, iPhone). With the Family Pass, your drives are also stored in your own iCloud account using Apple's iCloud service, so they survive a lost or replaced phone. This uses your iCloud storage. The data is in your iCloud, not ours: we can't see it, and the app sends no copy to any server we run.
  • More than one driver (Family Pass, iPhone). With the Family Pass, the app can hold a separate log for each driver in the family, each stored the same way.
  • Encrypted. Your phone encrypts the app's data, and Apple encrypts iCloud data in transit and on its servers.
  • Nothing sent to us. We don't run any servers for the app, and the app has no ads and no analytics of our own.

Maps

The app shows a map behind each route, during a drive and afterward. Your saved drives are never uploaded to a map service, but to draw the map, the map service receives the area being shown, which follows the drive's route.

  • iPhone (Apple Maps). The app uses Apple's MapKit, which loads map images for the area on screen from Apple, like any map app. Apple handles this under its privacy policy.
  • Android (Google Maps). The app uses the Google Maps SDK for Android. To load and run the map, Google receives the map area on screen (which follows the drive's route), your device's IP address, and Maps SDK usage information: diagnostics and crash reports, map interactions such as pan and zoom, and a pseudonymous Maps SDK identifier. Google handles this under its privacy policy. We never receive it.

Family sharing (Family Pass, iPhone)

The person who sets up the Family Pass can invite family members to the learner's log through Apple's iCloud sharing. Everyone invited can see the log, including the name on the permit, drive routes, times, supervisor names, saved supervisors, drive and coaching notes, and checked skills, and can add drives, notes, and sign-offs from their own iPhone. Only people you invite can join. If the log holds more than one driver, every driver's log is shared. The log is stored in the iCloud account of the person who shared it and counts against that person's iCloud storage.

  • Ending sharing: the person who shared the log can remove anyone, or stop sharing, from the Family tab → Family phones → Manage family (also in Settings → Family phones).
  • Leaving: a family member can leave from the Family tab → Family phones. The family's drives stay with the rest of the family.

Sharing and exports

You can create a backup file or a PDF progress report. When you choose where to send it (such as AirDrop, Mail, Messages, or Files), it goes only where you send it. The backup file contains precise routes, and both files include drive dates, times, and the supervising adult's name, so share them only with people you trust. We never receive these files.

Permissions

  • Location while using the app records route, distance, speed, rough spots, and automatic day/night classification during a drive you started, including while the screen is locked. Without it, timer-only logging remains available. iPhone: asked at the end of setup, after the app explains why; change it in the iPhone Settings app or from the Location access card in the app's Settings. iPhone shows its location indicator during a drive. Android: asked when you start your first drive, after the app explains why, with a "Timer only" choice; a "Recording a supervised drive" notification shows for the whole drive. Change it in the Android Settings app.
  • iCloud (Family Pass, iPhone) backs up and shares the log as described above. You can turn off iCloud for Earn Your Keys in the iPhone Settings app; drives then stay on the phone only.
  • Notifications are asked the first time a drive starts (on Android 13 and later, when a drive with location starts). They deliver the "Still driving?" check, the notice that a drive ended on its own, (on Android) the notice that a drive is recording, and, with the Family Pass on iPhone, family notes: when a drive from another family phone is saved, and milestones such as reaching half the required hours. Family notes are created on your phone from the family log already in your iCloud, only after a drive is saved, never during one, and never with anyone's location. A drive note names the driver and the drive's length, not the supervisor, since it can show on a locked screen. No notification server of ours is involved. You can turn family notes off in the Family tab. If you decline notifications, drives still end on their own after 10 minutes without movement.

Deleting your data

  • One drive: delete it in History. It moves to History → Recently deleted for 30 days, where you can restore it, then is removed for good (including from iCloud).
  • Everything: Settings → Delete all data permanently erases your drives, route locations, setup, notes, saved supervisors, and checked skills, from your phone and, with the Family Pass, from your iCloud. If you shared the log with family, this deletes it for the whole family. On a family member's phone, it only removes that phone from the family log.
  • Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone. A copy in iCloud stays until you delete it: use Delete all data first, or remove it in the iPhone Settings app (your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Earn Your Keys).

Previously exported files remain at the destination you selected and must be removed there separately.

Purchases

The Family Pass is bought through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never receive your payment details. The app checks with Apple whether the Family Pass is active on your Apple Account or through Family Sharing.

Children's privacy

The supervising parent or guardian operates the app, provides consent during setup, and controls deletion. If you believe a child under 13 used the app without parental involvement, contact us.

About the driving record

Reports and backups are supporting evidence for a supervising parent's records. They are not a government filing and never replace your state's own certification (for example, Georgia's DDS-7 affidavit or Florida's HSMV 71143). In-app sign-off is recorded by the supervising adult on their phone.

Changes

If data practices change, we will update this policy, its effective date, and the relevant store disclosures before the change ships.
